The 3000th beer from the 100th country

In one of the greatest festivities of OMH's 8 years of existance we managed break both the 3000 beer barrier and the magic 100 country barrier in the same evening. We managed to get together no less than 12 members (new record), and of them finally Jonas Bofjäll and Fredrik Nyström are included in our official ratings. Another fascinating number this evening was 56, which was the number of new beers we tried.

The majority of the beers this evening was brought back by tours truly from Kazakhstan and Moscow. The Kazakhstani beerscene is actually quite OK with a fair number of breweries producing decent lagers, and it is not very difficult to pick up a small variety of beers, even in remote small towns. The Kazakhstani beer that fared the best in our ratings was Karagandinskoe Traditsionnoe, a pilsner in the Czechis style brewed in the stepp city of Karaganda. In Moscow beer is available everywhere, and even if most of the beer you find are standard lagers I must admitthe the beer scene in Moscow is well worth examining more closely than I had for. The most interesting beer I picked up was a Moscow brewed stout called Corund Angliyskiy Ale Stout, which tasted like a dry, anise spiced lighter version of a Baltic porter. The best scoring Russian beer was however the clean, balanced dark lager Botchkarev Temnoe.

More or less as usual we had received a box of beers from good friends. This time from Josh Oakes. This was where the real goodies came from... The supreme #1 of this evening was the excellent Tree Brewing Hophead India Pale Ale from British Columbia, outscoring another British Columbia favourite brewery of our's :Sailor Hägar. Their Narwhal Pale Ale is a fine example of the style. But Josh did not onlysend us good beers. He sent us two new countres too. Almaza Pilsner from Lebanon might not be all that bad, but Fiji Bitter is just the beer you could expect froma small equatorial country, or worse.

Josh was however not the only friend to bring us exotic beer. Robert Tellvik brought us Beer Chang from Thailand and Beerlao Lager Beer from Laos, which was yet another new country for us. The person who had put down the most work to dig up a new beer country for us was however Linus Rispling, who had cycled all the way from Sweden to Pakistan, just to bring us a can of the unusually interesting malta Murree Brewery's Malt-79. Unfortunatelyit finished last on position this rating session...
