Ohhh... My Head... - Autumn travels and sessions 2004

The autumn of 2004 included a lot of travelling, and as a consequence lots of beers to enjoy. The travels took me to California and Montréal as well as the western parts of Belarus and Ukraine, and from there west into Hungary. Björn again went to England and Belgium. Starting with the California trip, I owe big thanks to The RateBeer memebers in southern California. Most of all Chris Quiroga who drove me more or less around all of Southern California ending up at Dr. Bill's place with so much good beer to drink it nearly killed me. Another big thanks goes out to Steve Kinsey that took me to Stuffed Sandwich, one of the most interesting beer places I've visited. What look unassuming at a first glance is really like a treasure chamber, and the owner is the beer geekiest man ever born. He knows his beer... Of the Californian beers the brewpub Pizza Port at Solana Beach almost had a grand slam with their peculiar, full bodied, acidic Belgian styles ales. Also another brewpub: Oggi's in Vista had some amazing beers. The excellent brewer Bear Republic also deserves being mentioned. In Montréal there are many brewpubs. The most prominent of them being Dieu du Ciel!. As this was my 2nd visit I've already sampled many of their beers, but two new highlights were Chaman and Déesse Nocturne. Ratebeerians around Montrél organized a great tasting including many beers from NE USA. One of the finest of these beers was Newport Storm '02 from Rhode Island. A very interesting, but fairly unknown Quebécoise microbrewery is Microbrasserie Charlevoix. They do many styles, but really excels in Belgian style ales. Also in Ukraine they make good beer. A good new brewery Persha from L'viv makes among others an interesting beer Chorne, meaning "black" in Ukrainian. A suitable name for what is very much in the style of Baltic porter. I managed to stumble upon a brewpub in Uzhgorod, inside Hotel Intourist-Zakarpatiya, where a good lager was made. Many Belorussian beers are still sub-par, but Brestskoe Temnoe from the border town Brest is a good dunkel. Of the Belgian beers tasted the finest examples was bought at Akkurat - Bush Prestige. Another magnificent barrel aged beer from Dubuisson. Abbaye du Rocs Grand Cru is another winner in our books, as is the new dry hopped Cuvée des Champions from Cantillon. Printemps de Silly is a freshly hoppy saison that we also wholeheartedly recommend. Best scoring of the Swedish beers this autumn was, more or less as usual, Nils Oscar's christmas beer, sampled at Stockholm Beer Festival. This time it was roughly in the style of old ale. It was however a close fight between no less than four breweries. Jämtland had mad an anniversary ale with locally grown hops (not far from the arctic circle!), Slottskällan offered an exceptional oktoberfestbier and the newish brewery Oppigård had a good winter ale. At Nynäshamns Svartölsfestival we also got to try Stormaktsporter from Närke Kulturbryggeri, that finally seem to start real production. We could also add a large number of new countries to our list. From Netherlands Antilles, US Virgin Islands, Burkina-Faso and Syria we got hold of one standard lager each. We also managed to dig up a wheat beer from Bhutan, a good lager from the new microbrewery of the autonomous Finnish islands of Åland, and two beers from Cambodia, including a tropical stout.
