The brewing at Sofiero, which back then was a farm, started in 1888.
They started brewing beer, but soon the landlady decided to brew only Svagdricka, a weeker
kind of malt beverage, ecause she didn't like the hinds to be drunk... In over 100 years
it was family owned, but 1989 Pripps bought the brewery and almost immediately wanted
to close it down. Instead the emloyees and the current manager bought it, and the production
was continued.
Sofiero nowadays brews a number of beer specialities, and alcoholic lemonades. They also serves as an importer of foreign quality beer from breweries such as Pilsner Urquell, Anchor, King & Barnes... The production are estimated to around 1 million litres. Furthermore Sofiero is one of the Southernmost swedish breweries, situated in an area that not only has a lot of breweries, but also the closeness to Denmark where beer is significntly cheaper adds to the difficulties for brewers in the region. Sofiero uses open copper vessels heated over open fire, which gives all their beer a distinct burnt flavour, as in Sofiero 1888 Pils, their "main" product. To their most unusual products Sofiero Whisky Malt must be counted. It is a bock which, as the name hints is brewed from whiskey malt. Some of their other specialities are Sofiero Mjöd, a mead that includes honey, and the ginger spiced lager Mårten Trotzig's Öl | |
Currently their products are: Only beer above 3,5% listed.
